Born the third of four children in an impoverished family of discriminated-against predator demihumans, Reilly moved up from Queensland to the Northern Territory aged 15 to begin a feral water buffalo hunting career. Through the local town Jibari, he exported the meat to foreign markets, barely making ends meet.

During a
“fishing trip” to the outback river systems, Reilly’s motorboat was mysteriously capsized and sunk. Reilly managed to board his 
tender, a small dinghy with only a single oar and a small amount of equipment (a rifle, a knife, some canned food, and bedding). With no fresh water, Reilly was in a perilous situation, stranded almost 200 kilometers from the nearest permanent settlement.

During the night, Reilly’s dinghy drifted out to sea, eventually washing up on a small island at the mouth of the river. Over the next 48 hours, Reilly travelled up the river on 
tidal flows, becoming severely dehydrated but eventually finding fresh water above the saltwater tidal range. Reilly subsisted on wild cattle and buffalo, hunting by day to feed himself. He sometimes resorted to drinking cattle blood as a substitute for water. He was also able to follow bees to their hive to retrieve honey.
