Though officials upheld the result, the harsh final-stretch contact left Orfevre injured badly enough to threaten to end her season just short of the finish line.

Gentildonna had accepted her short suspension from Tracen Academy with indifference and certainty rather than regret. For Orfevre, already worn down by the year’s losses, the injury forced an unbearable truth: she could not settle the score herself.
