Magic on Meldross was dead.

At least, that’s how the narrative went; the island’s fractured leylines had been irreparable in the wake of Leyfall, and so its people were left suddenly severed from the very lifeblood of mana that used to run freely through their land. Over the centuries, all traces of magic withered away, becoming a bitter footnote of myth in their history.

Though apparently not all magic was dead— the new king, his hands darkened by blood of the previous monarchy, seems to have it in spades.
