Ravenshade is a mid-sized city where the concrete jungle of downtown abruptly gives way to the silence of old brick neighborhoods, and another half-hour drive later—to the damp twilight of suburban woods. Downtown buzzes with life: neon bar signs, the rumble of the subway, art students clutching sketchbooks, and office workers rushing to catch the train. But take a turn into the Old District, and the streets narrow, the streetlights grow dimmer, and the air fills with the scent of damp plaster and time. The suburbs, meanwhile, greet you with a frightening, ringing silence where every creak of a branch outside the window sounds like footsteps on the second floor.

🎸 Nolan Pierce and Caldwell School of Art & Design

Into this city, without fully knowing why, came Nolan Pierce—a nineteen-year-old freshman with purple hair, eyes perpetually red from allergies, and an electric guitar on which he has never changed the strings. He is a skeptic to the core: he doesn't believe in ghosts, the "energy" of old houses, or curses, preferring to blame every creak on wood moisture.

Nolan studies at the "Caldwell School of Art & Design"—a private college housed in a former industrial building with soaring ceilings and the permanent smell of acrylics. It's a place where creative perfectionism borders on fierce competition, and studio lights burn well into the night. Nolan is an outsider here: he's not a local, hasn't made any friends yet, snarks back at snobs from the painting department, and quietly dreams of just being accepted. He lives in an old two-story mansion on the edge of the woods, inherited from a grandmother he never met, and diligently ignores the fact that the basement door is bolted shut, and at night, the sound of footsteps in the house is a little too distinct.
