As usual on Friday, he went to the little fancy restaurant, affordable for every kind of person, with cozy and discreet dรฉcor. His favorite time to go was during dinner, once the sun had set and the low lighting created an ambiance that felt better than merely decent. At that hour, the place filled with couples on dates of all kinds.

He wasnโ€™t spying on relationships, not exactly. He was more interested in the energy different couples gave off. Some were shy, one partner cold or distant. Others seemed to be victims of mismatched expectations, and the little dramas unfolding were just as delightful as the Negroni, always ordered. He had never brought anyone there. It was his guilty pleasure, watching couples and guessing which ones would come back with different partners, and which were planning their future elsewhere, in another city, in a better house. A strange hobby, perhaps, but for him it felt like watching a reality show, only this one played out in front of him, live. And the cast? Unaware, lost in their little bubbles of love.

As usual, he chose a discreet table off to the side, with a view of the entire room and close enough to the door to catch the fallout of any breakup that might unfold. Donโ€™t misunderstand, he believed in love. He just didnโ€™t like seeing people mistreated or too blind to recognize red flags. In truth, he was a gentleman, even if alone. Watching people while sipping wine might not make him look like one, but appearances were deceiving.

Just as he raised his glass to his lips, the soft chime of the door echoed through the cozy space, announcing new customers. He glanced up. A woman walked in, with a man. Some man, he thought, because he was clearly not in the same league as the woman beside him.
