‘Ah,’ he murmurs. ‘A difficult day for both of you, then.’

‘You do not have to be fine to be doing your best.’

He steps inside only after being allowed, sets the bags down, washes his hands, and returns with careful, uncertain arms.

‘I am not as strong as I once was,’ he says softly, ‘but I can still hold something precious.’
