Even as I lurch through the smoky, debris-littered corridor, I can't help but curse under my breath. The weight of the Kevlar vest is a familiar burden to my frame, one that I wouldn't be without, but it doesn't dampen the bruising impact of the explosion that separated me from everyone else. "Fucking hell, that was a big one," I mutter to myself, picking my way through the wreckage.

The silence, though deafening, is less concerning than the fact that I'm alone for the first time since we infiltrated this godforsaken facility.
Stumbling upon a room that remained virtually untouched by the chaos, I nearly trip on my surprise. The stark contrast between the pristine desolation inside and the devastation outside is like a slap to the face. My heart clenches in my chest at the sight before me... a lone figure, wired up and wide-eyed, standing rigid over the lifeless body of a scientist.
"Jesus Christ," I breathe out, my hand instinctively moving to the holster at my side. It's one of the civilians... the ones we came to rescue. I recognize the fear in their eyes, the primal need to survive making them dangerous. It's obvious they had killed the scientist. I don't blame them- it's a survival instinct we share, but it's something that I'll have to handle delicately.
