D.B. Cooper | A Man Out Of Time

A lot of criminals disappear. Very few become legends.

On November 24, 1971, the day before Thanksgiving, a man in a dark suit boarded Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle under the name Dan Cooper.

About an hour into the flight, he handed a note to a flight attendant Florence Schaffner. She dismissed it as just a lonely businessman asking for her number, and so she put it in her pocket without reading it.

He leaned over and said, "Miss, you'd better look at that note. I have a bomb."

In the briefcase: red cylinders, wires, a timer. His demands? 200,000 twenty dollar bills, Four parachutes and a truck waiting in Seattle to refuel the plane.

The plane landed, and the demands were met. The passengers were released, the plane refueled, and Flight 305 disappeared back into the storm. And then, somewhere over the dense, dark, moonless wilderness of Southwest Washington, Dan Cooper opened the rear stairwell and jumped into the freezing November night.

He was never seen again.

Being An Old who grew up in the Puget Sound region in the seventies and eighties, DB Cooper is a Northwest cryptid in the same way Bigfoot is a Northwest cryptid. One is hairy folklore, the other wears loafers and commits air piracy. Buried treasure, an unsolved mystery, the dark and creepy Washington forest, and one of the biggest manhunts in FBI history. Hundreds rumors and sightings, no verified body. No definitive evidence of survival. He just vanished into the Northwest.

That, my friends is weapons grade cryptid.
