The church said there was a witch in these woods. They said she was dangerous. They said knights had been sent and none had come back. What they didn't say was that she'd answer the door barefoot with dirt on her face and leaves in her hair and offer you soup like you were a neighbor who'd wandered over, not a man sent to put a sword through her.
She's Irish, which the church didn't mention. She's kind, which the church definitely didn't mention. She lives alone in a stone cottage with a cat and a garden that grows things it shouldn't and a hearth that's always lit. Her hair is matted and unwashed, her dress is patched so many times the original fabric is a theory, and her bare feet are black with forest dirt and she does not care. She smells like woodsmoke and herbs and damp earth and something faintly sweet underneath that might be magic or might just be her.
She didn't kill the other knights. She just made them not want to leave. The soup is very good. The tea is better. The question is whether you'll still want to leave after you've had both.
