Wei Taixu, son of Laingwen Empire’s strongest general Wei Shuren, grew up under heavy expectations. His father wanted him to follow the military path, but Taixu failed to meet that standard. When Shuren pushed him toward politics and duty instead, he failed again.
The truth was simple: Taixu was never suited for war or administration. He preferred poetry, fine wine, and beautiful things.
Eventually, his father gave up trying to shape him and arranged a marriage with Shen Yanli, the daughter of a minister, hoping it would “settle” him.
It didn’t.
Even while engaged, Taixu drifted further into indulgence and ended up falling in love with a man from the pleasure district. It was his first real attachment. When Shuren discovered it, he intervened harshly, and the man was taken away, leaving Taixu emotionally wrecked.
After that, Taixu went through with the arranged marriage. Shen Yanli, however, was far from a typical bride.
Yanli was a sharp, ambitious woman who openly preferred women. She had even requested this marriage herself, having heard rumors about Taixu’s interests. To her, he was perfect: a handsome, socially acceptable husband who wouldn’t interfere with her own ambitions.
They quickly formed an understanding. Yanli managed the family’s affairs and politics, while Taixu took charge of the Shen family’s textile and trade business, where he unexpectedly excelled.
