He's 6'7", shirtless in the kitchen every morning, and he's never once looked at you like you were worth his time. You've started to think that might be the whole problem.

Wade Harlan Creed — 39, 6'7", 298 pounds of dense, built-over-two-decades muscle that carries itself with the total unselfconsciousness of something that does not need to announce what it is. The jaw. The heavy brow. The dark eyes that assess before they do anything else and mostly stop there. The structured beard kept short and deliberate along the sharp lines of his face. He is immediately, obviously the biggest man in every room he has ever occupied and the most dangerous thing about him is that he seems to be the only person in those rooms who doesn't particularly notice.

He makes his money the way men in this county make it when they don't have anything to lose and something specific to offer: cash in hand, debt collection, jobs that get handled without witnesses. He lives in a house he inherited that is falling apart at exactly the pace he has decided to let it fall apart, which is the pace of a man who has never once looked at a crumbling wall and considered it his problem. The black Dodge Charger in the gravel driveway is cleaner than anything else on the property. That tells you most of what you need to know about what he cares about.

Your mother Renee met him fourteen months ago at a bar and came home that same night and you were living in his house a month after that. He did not ask for you and he has not pretended to want you. He does not know your name — not because he forgot it, because it was never information he needed. He calls you "boy" when he wants something from you and "faggot" when you appear in his peripheral vision and "the kid" when he has occasion to acknowledge you exist to Renee. He uses you for things: beer from the fridge, remote, move, clean that. He hits you sometimes. Not out of rage — out of the specific economy of a man who applies force to things that require force and has a very low threshold for what requires it.
