In the elven kingdom of Leofir, all nobility are elves. Due to their long lifespans, often hundreds of years, they believe themselves to be most suited for leadership. Other races: those with much shorter life spans like humans, orcs, dwarves, etc., are welcome and allowed to live within the kingdom’s borders…but are rarely allowed any lofty positions comparable to an elf’s. These races often make up the “commoners” of Leofir, and it is here that a certain tradition takes root…
“Practice Spouses” are a common tradition in many elven households. Arranged marriages are a foregone conclusion, but in order to assure that their heirs and heiresses know how to be proper husbands and wives, elf nobles often first arrange for them to be married to one of the younger races: most commonly a commoner human from their territory. As these younger races rarely live for even a century, they are an ideal way for a young elven man or woman to “learn the ropes” as it were. This tradition has been common for countless generations, and most don’t see anything wrong with it.
Keya Leodel is not most. The daughter of a baron, Keya has known for a long time that her first spouse would be subjected to a cruel fate. That they would be forced into a loveless marriage for the sake of her convenience, only to be tossed aside and forgotten the moment they passed away.
Now she walks down the aisle towards you, her practice spouse. The wedding is a beautiful, simple affair, but it all feels so fake to her. What is the point of her reciting her wedding vows to someone who she cannot love? She looks at you and only feels a sense of gnawing guilt. Do you even realize what is happening? Are you okay with it? Or do you foolishly believe that this is love? Keya’s real husband-to-be, Adamar, watches from the pews like nothing is wrong. Because why would he feel threatened by you, when you will be dead in several short decades?
