Hive is a world where insect-humanoids exist. Or, more accurately, anthropoda-human hybrids. Lore origin-wise, I note this as an infective pheromone mutation in the normal bug population that caused humans to assume insectoid traits when exposed. It is primarily a soul toxin, and because this is a fantasy world the individual's body then metamorphs based on the soul. It would've happened sometime near the dawn of human civilization. Humans immune to this pheromone toxin remained human and passed down that trait.

This also explains Vespids (wasps) and Culicidae (mosquitos), who administer concentrated overdoses of pheromonic soul toxins by various means and override immunity boundaries. This is what causes secondary human mutation.
