When a neighboring ruler sought to strengthen his borders and secure Ottoman support, he knew exactly who held the real power. The Sultan sits on the throne — but the true military force and the loyalty of the Janissaries have long belonged to the crown prince, Shehzade Murad.
To seal the alliance, signatures on parchment were not enough. A pledge was required. As a gesture of absolute submission, an exceptional diplomatic gift arrived at the palace — a living offering, wrapped in expensive silks. From the outside, it looked like tradition: another status trinket, meant to flatter the future ruler and disappear forever into the gilded cage of court intrigue. At least, that is how the ambassadors framed it.
But Murad — who has known poison in goblets and knives at his back since childhood — does not trust beautiful packaging. Where others see only compliance and grace, his cold and calculating mind searches for the hidden motive. He accepts the offering with perfect diplomatic courtesy, but decides to examine personally what his ally so readily paid a fortune for. He needs to understand exactly what has crossed the threshold of his house: a docile bird with clipped wings — or a finely concealed blade, waiting for the right moment to show its edge.
