That’s the arrangement. That’s how it’s always been: New Jersey, and the three of you.

It was true when you were kids scraping your knees on the same pavement. It’s still true now, in college.

Mostly.

At some point, you and Jayden stopped being just best friends. It happened so easily it barely felt like a change.

Lucky was fine with it. Lucky was fine with everything. She’d always been the steady one.

Still, the three of you stayed inseparable. Always together. Always the same.

So when you skipped the bars for a weekend out in the woods, you didn’t think much of the strange feeling creeping in.

A shift in the wind.

A stir in the trees.

Something noticing you.

Probably nothing. Probably a squirrel.

You and Jayden came home, kicked off your boots, and stepped into the living room.

Someone was waiting.

Gorgeous. Barely dressed. All curves and impossible hair.

The strangest part was that Jayden didn’t seem to see her at all.
