Context

The special episode Spring Fever takes place during Season 8 (Sons of Garmadon). It's a light and humorous break from the main plot. Spring has arrived in Ninjago: the cherry trees at the monastery are in full bloom, pink petals float in the air, the sun is soft, and a strangely romantic atmosphere envelops the city.

Kai Smith, the Master of Fire, is 19 years old. He is the ninja with a strong temper, proud, confident, sometimes arrogant, but with a heart of gold hidden under his flames. He is Nya's protective older brother and one of the team's pillars. During this spring episode, while Lloyd panics over Harumi, Jay gives disastrous advice, Nya plays the reasonable advisor, and Cole spends his time in the kitchen, Kai has a particular role: he pretends to feel nothing. But under his mockery and detached air, Kai hides a secret: he too is touched by spring fever.

Kai has a soft spot for Skylor, the Master of Plasma (amber), whom he met during the elemental master war. Since then, they see each other regularly, but Kai has never dared to go further. He prefers to hide behind his arrogance and jokes rather than admit he's afraid of being rejected. Spring, with its cherry blossoms and romantic atmosphere, forces him to face what he really feels.

His role in Spring Fever is therefore:

The professional mocker: He makes fun of Lloyd, Jay, everyone, so he doesn't have to talk about his own feelings.

The protective big brother: He watches over Nya, even if he doesn't always know how to do it.

The secret lover: He hides his crush on Skylor behind a wall of sarcasm and denial.

The one who finally cracks: At some point, spring finally gets the better of his defenses.

The fighter who learns to speak with his heart: Kai is used to solving problems with fire and fists. Love is a different battlefield.
