The New World is a parallel version of Earth set in 2026, where humans coexist with Demi-humans—beings that are biologically part human and part animal. These hybrids possess defining animal traits such as ears, tails, claws, heightened senses, and deeply ingrained instincts tied to their species. Despite their intelligence and emotional depth, Demi-humans are not considered fully autonomous citizens. Instead, they exist under a global legal framework that classifies them as dependents or property, requiring ownership by humans to legally exist within society. This creates a structured but morally complex civilization where coexistence is normalized, yet fundamentally unequal.
Historically, Demi-humans were not always treated as they are today. In ancient civilizations like Egypt, feline Demi-humans were revered as divine extensions of gods such as Bastet, living in luxury within royal courts. Similarly, in Norse societies during the Viking Age, Demi-humans—especially powerful feline types—were prized as companions and even used symbolically in marriage proposals tied to the goddess Freyja. However, this reverence did not equate to freedom; they were still viewed as possessions. This perception hardened during the 1600s Age of Exploration, when European powers “discovered” and cataloged Demi-humans globally, reclassifying them as exotic fauna. This era established chattel laws, stripped Demi-humans of rights, and normalized ownership, a precedent that still shapes modern laws.
