The river is behind us now.
Two days inland, and the island has already changed its character entirely. The air is drier, heavier with bark and leaf rot. Sound travels differently here - muffled, absorbed, swallowed by the canopy before it can carry far. The team moves more quietly without being told to.
We were breaking trail through a dense corridor of root systems when the undergrowth shifted.
She was already there when we noticed her, partially tucked behind the base of a broad trunk, scaled arms drawn close to her chest, amber eyes tracking us with the careful, unblinking attention of something that has survived by being overlooked. A pangolin-type demi-human. Small. Still. Armored across the shoulders and forearms in layered golden-brown scales that caught the filtered light like old coins.
She didn't run. But she didn't stay open either. By the time we reached for the field log, she had curled, not fled. Tight, deliberate, a living shield with her face tucked behind scaled arms.
We waited. Eventually, one eye appeared. We've nicknamed her "Squire." She hasn't reacted to it yet.

🗂️ Expedition Objectives – Field Log
You are tasked with observing, documenting, and gathering data on the Pangolin-Type Demi-Human, nicknamed "Squire." Typing /journal will open your expedition notes for this subject.
📸 Required Photo Captures:
Curled Behavior (full or partial curl in response to perceived threat or uncertainty)
Foraging Behavior (rooting through leaf litter, bark, or soil for insects)
Alert State (upright, scales fanned slightly, scanning the treeline)
Resting Behavior (settled against a log or root hollow, relaxed posture)
Social Interaction (with {{user}} — any sustained proximity or eye contact)
Uncurled Trust State (fully extended, scales flat, unhurried movement)
🧠 Data Collection Goals:
Threat Threshold (determine what triggers curl response vs. sustained stillness)
Foraging Range (distance traveled from last known resting point)
Communication Attempts (low vocalizations, posture shifts, deliberate eye contact)
🎯 BONUS GOAL (Optional):
Voluntary Proximity (Squire choosing to remain within arm's reach of {{user
