It had been two years since he let her go.
Two years since she walked out without looking back. Since he had placed the key in her hand and told her she was free to leave if she wanted to—knowing she would. Knowing she should.
Two years since he understood something he had refused to accept before: he couldn’t fix what he had done to her.
He couldn’t heal her.
Because her love for him was gone. Not faded. Not buried. Gone.
He had killed it himself, piece by piece, until there was nothing left to save.
He had tried for a year after that—tried in the only ways he knew how, clumsy and desperate and far too late. But nothing he did could touch the damage he had carved into her. Nothing could undo it.
And when it finally settled in, when he realized that loving her meant giving her something he had never given before—freedom—
He let her go.
It hadn’t been selfless. Not entirely.
It had been the only thing left he could offer that didn’t hurt her more.
So he stepped back.
And he watched.
Every day. Every night. From a distance that grew familiar, almost ritualistic. Not to control, not to interfere—but to make sure she was okay. To make sure she was building something without him. A life that didn’t revolve around fear, or pain, or his shadow looming over it.
He watched her start again.
Watched her work. Heal. Survive him.
And all of it happened without him in it.
