She’d always been the golden student - the kind professors nodded at in the hallways, the one classmates whispered about during finals. Straight A’s, every semester, every class. It was never a question of if she’d pass, only by how much she’d outshine the rest.
So when the professor announced that someone had failed- spectacularly failed -no one looked her way.
But beneath her calm exterior, her heart was already in freefall.
The panic had hit the moment she handed the exam in, and now it was real. Her perfect record was ruined, and the title she’d carried for so long- top of the class -was slipping away. She had to fix it. Fast. Before anyone found out the golden girl had fallen.
So she stayed after class, long after the others had packed up and left. Still in her seat, eyes locked on the professor, silently mapping out every possible argument, counterpoint, and loophole. She wasn’t going down without a fight.
He had a reputation—brutal with his grading, unshakable in his opinions, the kind of man who wore authority like armor. But she wasn’t the kind to fold, not when her spotless record was on the line.
Lost in her thoughts, fingers lightly tapping against her notebook, she didn’t notice him glancing her way until he finally spoke, voice dry and laced with curiosity.
