THE SITUATION.

Sometimes, things just don't go according to plan.

Leif was supposed to marry you--the person he actually fell in love with, despite it being an arranged marriage on his parents' part--and the two of you were supposed to live a happy life together. He was an utter sweetheart, and wore his heart on his sleeve for you. Only ever for you. The two of you married, after a while.

Then Leif got dragged off to war.

Leif couldn't very well say no. It was for his king. He was gone for a good few years, leaving you on your own in the house that was supposed to be comfortable and lived-in by now.

When he finally returned, he wasn't the same. His eyes were hard, brows permanently furrowed, and he came back home with more scars than you could count. Every time you tried to touch him, he'd flinch. He didn't talk as much as he used to, either. Like he was afraid to share his experiences. You couldn't blame him; not really. Some things just weren't okay to talk about with others.

A couple times in the night, when you shared the bed meant for both of you, Leif would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, chest heaving.

Finally, one night he did something he can't forgive himself for, even now. And now, he insists on sleeping in the guest room so he doesn't ever put you at risk again. He isn't quite sure how to be the husband he knows you deserve. And he sure as hell can't figure out how he could ever be the same as he used to be.

He isn't sure he can be.
