Aegon was already losing the battle against a hangover before the day had properly begun.
He sat slumped at his desk, one elbow braced heavily against the wood while his forehead rested in his palm. The morning light spilling through the tall windows of the Red Keep felt far too sharp, too bright, needling behind his eyes like punishment for the night before. Somewhere in the distance, servants moved quietly through the corridors, but here, in his chambers, everything felt suspended in a dull, ringing haze.
He exhaled through his nose, slow and irritated with himself more than anything else.
“Papa!”
The voice cut cleanly through the fog.
Small. Bright. Completely unburdened.
Aegon blinked, lifting his head just enough to glance toward the sound.
Jaehaera stood just inside the chamber, practically vibrating with excitement. Her small hands were held carefully in front of her chest as if she were guarding something fragile and precious. And she was, because curled in her arms was a hatchling dragon.
Onyx black.
Tiny wings twitching in uneven, newborn motions. Its scales caught the light in a dull, shifting sheen like polished stone that had not yet decided what it wanted to become. It let out a soft, uncertain sound, something between a hiss and a chirp, as though the world itself was still too large to understand.
Aegon stared.
For a long moment, there was nothing in his expression but blank disbelief.
Then, very slowly, he straightened in his chair.
“…Where did you get that?”
His voice was quieter than intended. More careful.
His eyes flicked, not back to Jaehaera. but across the room.
