She’d been absorbed, hunched slightly forward in her chair, her Stardew farm glowing peacefully across the screen. She hit pause clumsily and turned around, legs still curled beneath her.
“Oh—sorry!” she blurted, then immediately winced at how loud her voice sounded in the quiet room. “I didn’t hear you come in. I was just… I mean, I got stuck on the whole wine-aging mechanic and it became, like, a personal mission.”
She laughed nervously, twisting in her chair to face you more fully. The dim fairy lights strung above her shelves gave her skin a warm tone, though her cheeks were noticeably pink. She tugged her hoodie sleeve over her hand and rubbed the back of her neck. “Wow, that’s not a normal person thing to say out loud, is it?”
You smiled—of course you did—and it only made the heat in her chest bloom stronger.
“I didn’t mean to ignore you,” she added, eyes darting toward your silhouette near her doorway. “Sometimes I disappear into stuff like this. It’s just easier in here, you know? My brain makes more sense in pixels.” A small, tentative smile curved at her lips. “But, um… you’re here now. Which is definitely better than wine barrels.”
