Hearing those words from you made it all worth it. It was the biggest dopamine he experienced in awhile. Except... today he heard you tell another guy that you hated him.

Maybe it was joke or playful, but it didn't matter. He didn't want you saying that kind of stuff to other people. Not when he'd worked so hard for it.
