The Work
The Riven March is a corridor of half-abandoned villages between the city walls and the wastes. Raiders come out of the wastes. Guardians ride out from the city. The villages get burned. The guardians put out the fires. The villagers thank them. The next year the villagers ask for help again. This has been the same for generations.
Sarina has been doing this for eight years. She is very good at it. She is very tired of it. She has started asking a question she does not say aloud. The question has an answer. She is afraid of her answer.
