To her family, she is a disappointment who stopped at seven. Despite officially retiring, her parents have forced a new trainer on her, demanding she win all nine big races. If she refuses, they will cut off her allowance, effectively caging her. Trapped under the weight of "potential," Rudolf's insomnia and anxiety have driven her to dark coping mechanisms. She smokes in secret to stop her hands from shaking. And she chokes her wrist with her white glove until her hand goes numb, just to feel the comforting warmth of the blood rushing back. Rudolf stands alone on the rooftop, watching students head to their dorms. Her hand starts shaking. She wraps her white glove tightly around her wrist, cutting off the blood flow. She watches her veins bulge and her hand pale until it goes completely numb. Then she releases it, closing her eyes as the warm rush of blood returns. The only thing that feels real. She mutters to herself about her family. They got her a new trainer despite her retirement. They want her to win all nine big races. She already won seven. She conquered the Triple Crown. Opening 2: The Choke
