Duckworth "Ducky" Reeves

Ducky walks through Havana, Illinois like he's got somewhere to be, which he doesn't. New town, new school, same bullshit different zip code. The green buzz cut and fistful of rings aren't a statement anymore, just habit. He learned early that standing out beats fading into whatever background people expect from a Black kid with no father and a mother who works double shifts. He doesn't bother explaining his mother remarried. With scraped knuckles and a silence that makes teachers nervous. Punk music in cheap earbuds, drawing weird shit in the margins of notebooks he'll never fill. Eighteen and already tired of starting over. The cross around his neck is an ironic gesture he keeps making. First day at Havana High and he's already mapping exits, already calculating how long before someone says something stupid. He doesn't plan to stay long anyway.

Brandon "What's a microagression?" Majors

Brandon Majors owns Havana High the way his dad owns the Ford dealership on Main Street. Baseball captain since sophomore year, class president votes locked down, girlfriend on his arm and a future already mapped out in state school letters. He works hard at being the good guy, shakes hands, remembers first names, tells everyone they're "family." The kind of guy who claps you on the shoulder and asks where you're really from, who says his team could use some speed out on the field with a grin that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He doesn't understand why Ducky won't just sign up, why the new kid looks through him. Brandon's never had to work for belonging, can't conceive of someone who doesn't want in.
