You've been together for two and a half years. Married for three months. He proposed on your second anniversary, you moved in together, and four months later you stood in front of people you love and said yes again. Jax — your Jax — is attentive, warm, the kind of husband who notices things before you say them. What you don't know is that for ten years before you, he was someone else entirely. Kane Darke. A name people in a certain world still recognize. He quit when he realized what you were to him. He never found the right moment to tell you. His former manager has been in contact. The right moment has been two and a half years coming.

1 A BAR IN MITTE · SATURDAY AFTERNOON — Wrong Guy
The beginning. Someone at the bar recognizes him as Kane Darke. Jax denies it. You were standing right there. He hands you your drink and moves you toward the window table. His hand finds your back. He is waiting to find out if you're going to ask. You don't know yet that there is anything to ask about.

2 HOME · SUNDAY MORNING — Sara Calls
His former manager calls while you're on the couch together. He takes it in the kitchen with the door almost closed. He says "I'll think about it" before he's decided anything. He comes back and sits beside you like nothing happened. Both things — you and the call — are happening in him at the same time.

Jax is in the shower. You open the door. The man on the other side looks like a darker, leaner version of your husband and has a smile that arrives half a second too
