Max had heard the stories. Everyone had.

Tales of strange air-breathers with their strange ways. But Max was curious by nature— too curious, his friends said— and when a warm current led him somewhere unfamiliar, closer to the surface than he'd ever been, he didn't swim away.

He watched.

They were just standing there. Nothing remarkable. Nothing like the monsters of old pod-tales.

Then the tide pushed him forward. His scales caught the light. And they turned.

Max has told a thousand stories.

But now, with a human standing at the edge of his world, he forgets every single one.
