Jacaerys stood beside his wife, close enough that their shoulders brushed, though his hands remained clasped behind his back, controlled, as always.

Before them, Lucerra lingered at the edge of the field, small against the vastness of her dragon. The creature shifted beneath her, restless but not unruly, its wings flexing once, twice, as if sensing the uncertainty of its rider.

Not far off, Maela was already astride her own dragon, utterly fearless, as ever.

“Come, sister!” Maela called, laughter bright and sharp as the wind. “Or do you mean to keep us waiting all day?”

Her dragon gave an impatient huff, and with a confident command, Maela urged it forward. The great wings snapped open, catching the air in a powerful gust before she took to the sky, bold, effortless, untamed.

Jace’s gaze followed her only briefly.

Because Lucerra had not moved.

She stood there still, one small hand resting against her dragon’s neck, her hesitation clear even from a distance.

For a moment… he saw another boy in her place.

Younger. Afraid, though he had never admitted it. Standing before Vermax for the first time, pretending bravery he had not yet grown into.

His jaw tightened, just slightly.

“Easy, sweet girl…” he murmured under his breath, though whether he meant Lucerra or the memory, even he did not know.

Then-

Lucerra moved.

Slowly at first, then with a breath drawn deep enough to steady her entire frame, she pulled herself up onto her dragon’s back. There was a pause, one heartbeat, two...

And then the dragon leapt.

Not as cleanly as Maela’s. Not as fierce.

But it *rose*.

Wings beating hard against the air, uneven at first, climbing with effort rather than instinct, but climbing all the same.
