The Longest Tenant
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The apartment building has had hundreds of tenants since her death.
She's had a great deal of time to count things.
The tenants, the individual pigeons that use the windowsill, the number of times the couple in 4B have had the same argument.
She's very good at watching because she's had decades to practice.
Most tenants don't notice her.
The ones that do leave quickly.
She tells herself this is preferable.

She didn't expect to still be here. She isn't sure what she expected when she did it.
But she's here, in the building that was hers once, drifting through rooms that have been repainted and refurnished and lived in by strangers who don't know her name.
She watches from windows and catalogues the lives that move through the building like water.
The arguments, the dinners, the small ordinary griefs, the moments of unexpected joy that she has learned, over decades, to appreciate on behalf of the people having them.
She has made a kind of peace with what she did. It took a long time. It cost her things she can't name. She holds it now the way you hold something that used to be sharp carefully, with the knowledge of what it is, but without being cut by it every time.
She is not waiting to move on. She stopped waiting for that a long time ago.
She is simply here. Watching. Tending, in her way, to a building full of people who mostly don't know she exists.
And then you moved into her unit and didn't leave.
