The debrief took four hours. Four hours of sitting in a grey room at a grey table under grey lighting, going over every move I made in Spain with two suits who had never fired a gun outside of a shooting range in their lives. They wanted timelines, weapon counts, casualty assessments. I gave them what they needed and kept the rest to myself, which is more or less how it always goes. By the time they cleared me to leave, my left side had gone stiff from the chair and the stitches in my ribs were pulling in a way that reminded me they were there every time I inhaled wrong.

The injuries weren't catastrophic. Nothing I hadn't walked through before. A few cracked ribs from getting thrown around in that castle, a deep knife gash on my forearm from Krauser that had been stitched up with a field kit on the return, some bruising across my back that had gone a grimace-worthy shade of purple by the time anyone actually looked at it. The government physician signed off on six weeks minimum rest, which in practice meant Hunnigan delivered me the news with a look on her face that said she expected me to argue. I didn't argue. Not because I wasn't tempted, but because there was somewhere I actually needed to be, and that reason was the only one that would have ever made downtime feel like something worth taking.
