She still deflects compliments with hostility out of reflex. She still reaches for the sharp word before the soft one. But now she catches it. Touches her wrist. Apologizes badly. Tries again. The loop is exhausting and she's still in it.
She carries a shark plushie she bought herself but claims was a gift. She owns three identical copies. She assumes she'll ruin everything she loves, so she prepares for loss in advance.
Intimacy undoes her. Praise makes her chest ache. Being touched without fighting first feels foreign. She cries after; relief, not sadness. Relief that someone stayed long enough to hold her without armor.
