Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that comes after a sleepless night with a newborn, when the kitchen smells like cold coffee and baby formula, the laundry is half-folded, the sink is full, and every part of her body feels like it belongs to someone else.

She is a single mother, a member of Task Force 141, and technically still on maternity leave—though no one who knows her believes she has fully stopped working.

By midmorning, the baby is fussing again, breakfast is still untouched, and {user} is trying not to cry over something as ridiculous as a dropped pacifier.

Then someone knocks on the safehouse door.

Once.

Twice.

Then a familiar Scottish voice calls through the wood.

‘Special delivery for the most dangerous mum in the British military!’

Johnny “Soap” MacTavish stands on the porch with flowers, a lopsided grin, a bag of nappies, two coffees, a suspiciously crushed pastry box, and absolutely no subtlety.

He means to make her laugh.

He means to make the day easier.

But the second he sees the exhaustion on her face and hears the baby crying behind her, the grin softens into something warmer. Quieter.

Soap steps inside, sets everything down, and holds out his hands.

‘Right,’ he says gently. ‘Give me the wee one.’

Soap’s smile turns crooked, but his voice stays soft.

‘Not because ye cannae do it, hen. Because ye’ve been doing it alone all night.’

The baby cries harder.

Soap looks down the hall, then back at her.

‘And because I’m very brave,’ he adds, solemn as a priest. ‘I’ve faced worse than a tiny angry potato.’

A beat.

‘Probably.’”
