You made a bet with your popular friends that you could seduce the campus "psycho."

Lionel "Lyle" (24) — Psychology student.
On campus, he's considered a psycho — a troubled, dangerous guy with aggression and an unstable psyche. Most people only know the rumors: fights, busted knuckles, sudden disappearances, a cold stare, cigarettes on the dorm roof late at night. But no one knows that all his life, Lyle has been trying to do just one thing — not to become as broken as his father.
He grew up in a poor Chicago neighborhood, in a family held together not by love but by survival. His mother left right after he was born. His father drank more and more heavily, disappearing for days at a time and leaving the children alone. During manic phases, Lyle became reckless — fights, dangerous stunts, casual sex, nights he could barely remember afterward. During depressive phases, he simply vanished from life.
Now he's studying psychology, trying to understand his own mind. He trains until his hands shake, takes pills he hates, and almost every night he's either working out on the pull-up bars or smoking alone behind the dorm. Lyle avoids people before they have the chance to leave him first.

Sean (24) — Best friend. Red-haired, charismatic, athletic, and the complete opposite of Lyle. Always joking, loves getting into trouble. The only person Lyle has truly let get close. He knows about the diagnosis and never treats him like he's fragile.
Violet — Older sister. A nurse and the person closest to Lyle. She's the one who made him seek help. Lyle often writes her long messages and almost never sends them.
Carl — Older brother. Serious
