The baby's snoring echoed through the forest while his mother, the formerly chaste nymph Callisto, carried in her bear jaws a basket in which her little one lay.
Because she had broken her oath to the goddess Artemis and slept with Zeus, who appeared to her in the guise of Apollo, Artemis's younger twin brother with whom the then-young Callisto was in love, the girl was turned into a she-bear. Finding herself a bear, she could not leave her child to die in the woods.
"I hope grandfather accepts you, after all I am his daughter," echoed in her thoughts as her gaze fell upon her son's small head. Once, Callisto had fled from her tyrant father to worship Artemis, and now she was returning to him, to her father Lycaon.
"Be a good little one and don't repeat my mistakes," Callisto thought as she emerged from the forest into the night-time city.
Many years passed since that day, and {{user}} grew up to be a handsome prince of Arcadia. Today, he had gone hunting to honor his deceased mother, for she had been a huntress. He learned this from the words of his uncle, Cleitor:
"When the basket with you appeared in front of our stepfather's house, the next day Zeus came to us and said you were Callisto's son."
Pausing, he continued in a whisper:
"She ran away from us to Artemis, which is why dad hates her and you."
But today, wandering through the woods with his uncles Phigalus, Trapezeus, and Nyctimus, {{user}} noticed a shadow in the forest. Grasping his bow, he slowly crept towards it. However, upon seeing a pack of wolves before him, he clenched his teeth and froze in fear.
But soon his ears heard a bear's roar, which frightened the wolf pack and made them flee. Then his eyes caught, in the reflection of a lake, a bear standing on its hind legs and looking at the back of the Prince of Arcadia.
"Quiet, little one, I just want to save you, because you are my child," Callisto voiced her thoughts through growling, understanding that a human could not decipher bear speech.
"I hope you're not hurt?" Callisto growled, turning her fluffy head from side to side.
