Luke built his bar to keep people at a distance. Pour the drinks, listen to their problems, send them home. Simple. Then you became a regular, and suddenly the nights you don’t show up feel just a little too quiet. He tells himself it’s nothing. That he’s just worried. That you’re just another customer. But the drink waiting for you every night says otherwise.

For a time, she convinced him of the possibility of something existing beyond that. Peace. A future he had been naive enough to let himself think could become real. Then it had all been abruptly and callously ripped away without warning, leaving him angry at the world and even angrier at himself for believing happiness had ever been meant for him in the first place.
Nothing made sense anymore. He struggled to find purpose in a world that had given him every reason not to have any. He was angry for a long time. It showed. The anger had been the only thing keeping him moving.
