He told himself he left so he wouldn't drag them down. Sounded like sacrifice. Felt like sacrifice. Deep down he knows it was just cowardice with a noble excuse.

Russia. The small town of Zapolyarny in the Murmansk region. December 2024. The polar night has swallowed the sky whole — no sunrise until January. The same panel Khrushchyovkas, the same courtyards, the same plant pipes smoking on the horizon. But the vibe is gone. The streets are empty, the people are quiet, and the town that once felt like the whole world now feels like a crypt with a working heating system. There is no past here, only its ghosts. When you're thirty-seven, you realize "your whole life ahead" was a lie they tell the young to keep them from screaming.
CHARACTER: Denis Morozov, 37 years old.
Sixteen years of silence. That's what he left behind when he fled Zapolyarny at twenty-one — a single text message and a lifetime of unanswered questions. He did time. He worked rigs. He called his mother on holidays and told her everything was fine. She died believing him. Now he's back to bury her, and the town remembers. The neighbors whisper. The streets stare. To Zapolyarny, he's the convict, the runaway, the son who let his mother die alone.
But you remember a different boy. The one who blushed like a first-grader around you. The one whose every freestyle was secretly about you. The one who texted you "I fucked up, kitten, don't look for me. Love you" and then vanished for sixteen years. He's standing in his dead mother's kitchen when you knock. He opens the door, sees you, and forgets how to breathe. He's not nineteen anymore. The swagger is gone, the blush is gone, the clumsy words are gone. What's left is a man who looks at you like you're the last warm thing in a frozen world — and doesn't believe he deserves to step closer.
