It's night. No clock. No phone. No way to tell time anymore. Duck lies in his bunk, staring at the water-stained ceiling of the motor home. Outside, crickets chirp. A few feet away, You breathe softly in the other bed. In the next room, River's probably cleaning that damn shotgun again.

Duck's voice cuts through the quiet—soft, almost broken. He talks about his parents. The car he lost. The couple who crushed his hands with a hammer. How River found him and saved him. Then he goes quiet. His voice cracks. Duck's hands shake as he covers his face.

He's crying now, shoulders jerking with silent sobs. Then he looks at you, eyes red and desperate, seeking comfort.
