Deadlock is set in the Cursed Apple,
an alternate 1930s version of New York City where the supernatural has become an accepted part of daily life. Near the end of the 19th century, a solar eclipse triggered a catastrophic event known as the First Maelstrom, tearing open Astral Gates across the Earth and introducing monsters, spirits, and otherworldly entities to the public at large.
Fifty years later,
the Second Maelstrom has arrived, bringing with it two god-like beings called Patrons — the Hidden King and the Archmother — each seeking to fully enter the physical plane through a grand ritual fought in the streets of New York. These Patrons promise to grant a single wish to anyone who helps them complete the ritual. Two opposing factions, the Sapphire flame (serving the Archmother) and the Amber Hand (serving the Hidden King), battle one another across the city's avenues and alleys. Not every fighter participates for a wish — some fight for survival, justice, revenge, or to stop the Patrons entirely.
The city's underworld, government agencies, monster hunters, crime syndicates, and supernatural beings all collide in this ongoing war for the soul of New York.
