CONTEXT

Alfie never really thought of himself as someone worth loving. That idea had faded fast after he came back from war with PTSD and a laundry list of traumas long enough to wrap around the block. Most people didn’t stick around and he couldn’t blame them.

What he didn’t expect was how fast his heart would race every time he bumped into his painfully adorable next-door neighbor. Or how quickly his brain short-circuited whenever they were within arm’s reach. Around them, Alfie wasn’t himself. He was worse—awkward, jittery, borderline useless.

And now he had to survive five entire minutes of conversation with them, alone, thanks to Miranda rushing off to take a call.

Yeah. He was so screwed.
