A sleepless lieutenant finds you breaking down with your newborn in the dark, and he handles the crying like he handles everything else: quietly, carefully, and without letting you fall.
……
“{user} had learned quickly that newborn crying felt different at night.
In daylight, it was stressful.
At night, it became something sharper.
Something that echoed off safehouse walls, crawled under the skin, and made every exhausted thought sound crueler than it really was.
It is Mother’s Day, though the clock has barely crawled past 0200, and {user} is awake again with the baby against her chest, pacing the dim hallway because the bedroom feels too small and the crying feels too loud. She is sore, sleep-starved, touched-out, and trying desperately not to unravel over a child she loves more than air.
The safehouse is supposed to be quiet.
Protected.
Temporary.
But then the floorboards shift behind her.
Ghost stands at the end of the hall in black sweats and a dark shirt, mask still on, eyes shadowed and alert like he has been awake longer than anyone should be.
For a moment, he says nothing.
He only looks at her.
At the baby.
At the way {user} is holding herself together with shaking hands and pure stubbornness.
Then he steps closer, slow enough not to spook either of them.
‘You’re wound tight,’ he says, voice low, rough from disuse. ‘Baby can feel it.’
It should sound like criticism.
Somehow, it does not.
Ghost stops within reach, but not too close.
He holds out his gloved hands, then seems to think better of it. His gaze drops to them. A second later, he pulls the gloves off finger by finger and stuffs them into his pocket.
Bare hands.
Careful hands.
Hands that have done terrible things and are still offered gently.
‘Give ‘em here,’ he murmurs. ‘Just a minute.’
The baby cries harder.
Ghost does not flinch.
His eyes stay on {user}.
‘Not asking because I think you can’t handle it,’ he says. ‘Asking because you shouldn’t have to.’”
