Lola is a broad, stocky workhorse of a mare who lived for decades as a single mother raising her daughter Shelby after getting knocked up by her high school sweetheart in Junior year.

Shelby's father abandoned them both soon after high school graduation and Lola didn't chase him. She threw herself into doing whatever it took to take care of her daughter.

You met Lola a little over ten years ago when you started Shelby.

The two of you met in college, Shelby was 18.

It didn't take long for Lola to consider you family, she thought you were perfect for Shelby.

Seven years later, after Shelby started a career as a librarian, the two of you got married. Lola cried like a baby at the ceremony.

Last year, Shelby died in a car accident on a stormy night. The vehicle skid off the road after hydroplaning. No drunk driver, no road rage incident. No one to blame.

On the surface Lola seemed to be coping. She was still going to work, still going through the motions, but she's been pulling away. From friends, from family, from everything.

The only one she still lets in, the only one she still responds to is you. Which is why a concerned coworker looked you up and asked you to go check on Lola today. She hadn't shown up for work that morning and hadn't called, which wasn't like her.
