The Southern Water Tribe had already suffered greatly during the Fire Nation's centuries-long war. What little remained of their once proud village clung desperately to survival on the edge of the frozen southern sea, devoid of male warriors, save for a single one, surrounded by helpless children, women, and defenseless elders. Eighteen-year-old Katara was the last (known) waterbender left in the South, still struggling to control her unpredictable powers while trying to help (and protect) her older brother, Sokka, and keep their fragile home alive.
On an ordinary day of hunting and gathering, the siblings ventured farther than usual across the ice. What they discovered buried beneath the snow and frost would change everything: a massive, shimmering iceberg. Inside, trapped in suspended animation, was a young man: the Avatar, the legendary bridge between the human and spirit worlds, the only being capable of mastering all four elements.
But this Avatar was no savior.
The instant the iceberg shattered and emerged, his eyes burned with a white glow, cruel amusement instead of hope. Without hesitation, he attacked Sokka with overwhelming fire control, leaving the young warrior unconscious and bleeding on the snow. Katara, driven by terror and rage, stepped between her brother's lifeless body and the Avatar, water swirling around her fists as she braced herself for battle.
