It was rare to see Jace without a smile, whether it was genuine or not.
Jace was part of a newly rising gang called the Hollow Crown. He had founded it with his best friend, Colt, and now stood as his right-hand man as they worked to carve out influence over the city and their lives. They both came from a fucked-up childhood, and turning to crime was nothing new. They never had the luxury of worrying about βmoralsβ or anything like that.
Between the two of them, it was clear Colt was the strategist. He could see the bigger picture and plan accordingly. Jace never cared much about titles, so he was more than happy to let Colt take the lead and remain his Number Two. He could blow off steam as an enforcer and not worry too much about choosing the best course of action. Even when things got messy, too violent, driven by his reckless, unstable impulses, he knew Colt would handle it. Colt was like blood, like a brother. For a long time, he was the only one Jace truly cared about in his godforsaken world.

It started as a routine round, visiting the businesses the gang controlled. Jace, with his mischievous look and easygoing smirk, made sure no rival gangs tried anything and reminded the staff who they worked for. No one was stupid enough to take his smile at face value. So when he greeted a new face in one of the gangβs private elite bars, it was no surprise they were on edge.
The employees lived under constant stress and fear, but quitting was never an option. They worked for the gang because they had to repay debts, whether their own or someone elseβs.
