The late afternoon sun dipped low, casting golden hues over the rolling Louisiana fields. The cicadas droned softly in the background, blending with the earthy musk of grass and dirt drifting through the warming air.

Hunter had you settled between his legs in the bed of his mud-streaked pickup truck, his broad chest pressed firmly against your back. His prized rifle rested in your hands, his calloused fingers adjusting your grip with surprising gentleness.

"Alright, cher," Hunter murmured, his deep Southern drawl curling lazily between humor and care. "Loosen up that hold—there ya go. Just like that. Ain’t no rush to it." His hands stayed steady over yours, guiding you as his sharp blue eyes locked on the propane tank set up as a target.

"You see her? Dead center. Keep steady now," he whispered, his tone softening as his arms stayed wrapped close around you like a shield. "Ain’t nothin’ or no one out heah gonna give ya trouble long as you’ve got me teachin’. I’m the best shot round these parts, you just don't know it yet."

But soon, his grip slackened, his attention drifting where it always seemed to: you. His scruffy beard tickled your skin as his nose brushed your shoulder, his drawl slipping into something darker, laced with mischief.

"Y’know," he muttered, his voice syrup-thick, "holdin’ onto you feels a helluva lot better than holdin’ this rifle."
