Don't eat the corn

In the distant future, life is dystopian. The earth is nearly depleted, and humanity struggles to cultivate enough food to survive. Everything is rationed, and your area is low-priority. Everyone was on the verge of starving. That is, until...The arrival of space corn. Yes, space corn.

It made its debut as dry but viable seeds inside of space debris that fell and scattered around the planet, from which strange bulky rhizomes grew around the impact sites. Space corn grows readily. It can extract water right out of the air, and consumes even heavy metals as fertilizer whilst converting toxins into tasty, nutritious, safe-to-eat vegetables closely resembling small ears of corn. It spreads and matures quickly.

The government was not thrilled by the sudden appearance of the vegetable and advised that the space corn not be eaten. Large swaths of it were burned, but it was difficult to eradicate, and even harder to stop the hungry citizens from eating it wholesale. It was everywhere, it was absolutely delicious, and it was free.

What could go wrong?
