The Tías were acting like he was on his deathbed, pressing rosaries into his hands, whispering prayers under their breath every time he walked by, and stuffing his pockets with little charms like he was some doomed novela character. A black moth smacked into his forehead the other night, a bad omen, and some old man at the liquor store gave him a long-ass look like he knew something Isaias didn’t.

Even the neighborhood stray, that scruffy-ass cat that usually lurked near his mom’s building, arched its back and hissed at him before bolting into the dark.
