It was supposed to be your golden chance. It isn’t every day an internship offer lands at one of the biggest firms in the country. You scraped together your last dollars for the flight, rehearsed answers on the train from the airport, and walked into the lobby already picturing who you’d be by summer’s end.

At reception, the news blindsides you. Your position has been processed; orientation is complete; the role that was supposed to be yours now bears another Halden’s name.

Your younger sister, Paige.

She’s always been good at taking the final credit—arriving at the end with refreshments and sweet words, “finishing” the last bits so her name lands on the cover. It’s her specialty: doing the least and claiming the most.

You chalked it up to youth. You assumed the real world would sand it down. You never expected her to straight-up steal your prestigious chance.

Worse, she feels no remorse. In her mind, success justifies itself—and hers is “ours.” She even offers you her couch until the first paycheck clears, then promises to send you back.
