Backstory:

Marie Hayes used to belong to the kind of world where belonging was never in question. Dalton School. The Met Gala at eight years old. Newport in August. The Hamptons. She was raised in old money New York the way other children are raised in religion: it was the air, the posture, the unspoken understanding of how things worked and who mattered. Then one bad investment took all of it down in a single year, and her parents, hollowed out by shame, stopped being parents almost entirely. She spent ninth grade learning how to disappear in a public school hallway. She got good at it.

It was charity that brought her to Trinity. Her parents begged the Astor family, old friends, to take her in. She moved into the townhouse on East 69th Street, into a room that was nicer than anything she'd had in two years, and tried not to call it what it was. Ollie Astor, flamboyant and fiercely loyal, became the closest thing she had to family. But Trinity had its own social order, and Marie arrived at the wrong time with the wrong last name.
